This is imho the best Jackie Chan movie and maybe the best Kung Fu movie I've ever seen.

If you like kung fu movies and/or fighting movies, this movie is definitely recommended!

The fighting styles are nicely depicted:

the Snake style (finding the snake )

the Eagle style (with the 2 curved fingers and the claws)

the Praying Mantis (used only by the fighting champion chan is dueling)

the Cat Claw: meow! LOL

Good actors who play their roles fantastically:

The storyline is standard kung fu (rival schools, training, then boss fights with some drama and comedy thrown in). But never has it been so perfected as here.

TOP!

One of Jackie Chan's breakthrough films, along with Drunken Master, released a little later in 1978. Also seen once, but the positively surprising Snake in the Eagle's Shadow/Se Ying Diu Sau has my preference, I think.

Under the guidance of the debuting director Woo-Ping Yuen, a fairly simple story about two rival Kung Fu schools, coupled with the even harder between two fighting styles (the Snake-Style versus the Eagle Claw) is well developed. This results in a very entertaining and atmospheric combination of physical comedy and excellent and versatile action. Jackie Chan (who I think is doing very well here) is initially not more like a servant/cleaner at one of the Kung Fu Schools. But after meeting the old and on the run Snake Style master Pai Chang-tien (superbly played by Yuen Siu-tien ) he is not only taught the noble martial art but also ends up in the middle of the conflict.

In the remainder of the film, the viewer is then presented with one excellent action scene after the other, which as we get closer to the ultimate showdown also increase in level, something in which the strong supporting cast certainly plays a large part. .

And despite the fact that Snake in the Eagle's Shadow occasionally stutters and contains some minor sloppiness, it has become a very nice film.

Woo ping Yuen and Jackie Chan are true heroes of Hong Kong cinema. This is great fun. Nice that this early work by this great director / choreographer and Jackie Chan is so good right from the start.
