Chang, the quintessential Shaw Bros director.

6 Chang films in 1974. I've only seen one of them, but I can dream of the rest. Like his entire oeuvre, actually. Not that I'm a frequent viewer of his work (I haven't seen 10%), but what I've seen is all in continuation.

It's what you'd expect from Shaw Bros. martial arts. A revenge plot, lots of fights, somewhat static but well-executed choreography, and some familiar faces. There are also classic studio scenes and (because it's older work) some real outdoor shots. Those are strikingly beautiful in this film, by the way.

It's all pretty uneventful, though I have to say the ending was striking. The sepia filter with the red flashes (and sometimes a completely red filter) made for a beautiful result. It's also remarkably brutal, perhaps that's why they made the ending a bit more stylized? In any case, there's quite a bit of death in this film.

One for the fans. Entertaining until the final scene, but rather ordinary; the ending earns it an extra half-point.

3.0*

Revisited on Blu-ray from the new Furious Eureka boxset.

The script and editing are a bit messy, but it's great to see Fu Sheng, Chi Kuan-chun, and Chen Kuan-Tai working together as Shaolin Disciples on a mission of revenge. Fu Sheng shines brightest here, both in terms of martial arts and charisma. Lots of studio footage, but the scenes shot on location look beautiful. The finale dims the colors, and every SB veteran knows there's going to be a lot of bloodshed and people will meet a brutal end.
