Extremely funny on all levels and also with a strong take on the legal system.
Actor, screenwriter and director Sacha Guitry in a masterful turn. Even though he does not claim a role himself, he still provides an original beginning where he introduces the actors and crew himself, praises some extensively, saddles the others with a "you're not that strong of an actor" but there still adds a "you were useful after all".
The film was made in just half a month. A clever scenario, with wonderful dialogue work (the scene of the "declaration" of the murder to a top lawyer, who boasts of 100 acquittals of criminals and whose view of the difference between "murderer" and "killer" is not without consequences remains) drips with black humor, while this one of the request to the pastor for a miracle that would boost village commerce shows humanity at its narrowest side and the super-smooth final scenes in the courtroom that things are not tender.
The film looks a bit older than it already is (I would have guessed the 1930s), but that does not detract from the pleasure that the film gives you.
Should it be added that Michel Simon is stunning once again?
