Nice, nice.

After a revival of the American Godzilla, it's good to see Japan reviving Gojira. I often find the Japanese versions much more charming, and this Shin Gojira proves that once again.

With Anno and Higuchi, they've certainly managed to secure two interesting directors. Higuchi earned some credits with his live-action Attack on Titan, and hopefully, Anno needs no introduction. These two getting behind a Gojira film... fascinating, to say the least.

And the film is pretty much what you'd expect. A bit more CG than the older versions, but that's no surprise. Still, it doesn't look overly serious or dramatic. The first version of Gojira, in particular, is delightfully goofy and clumsy. His eyes still stare straight ahead, and despite being a bit bigger and more imposing than in the older films (especially when he gets his fire beam—great scene), he still has that basic charm.

Partly due, of course, to the many political scenes. Gojira has always been somewhat of a sideshow in his own films; this one breathes new life into that tradition. Japan grapples not only with its nuclear past, but especially with its post-war past, in which they never regained full control of their country. It comes across surprisingly strongly.

There are also some nice nods to things like the monster's Japanese/American naming, but thankfully it's not 120 minutes of fanboy raving. All in all, another very enjoyable Gojira film; I think it could be the start of a new series.

3.5*

Quite different from that American film. Seeing the first images of Godzilla took some getting used to. He looked exactly like a retarded worm, but it soon became clear that he thankfully still had to evolve. Ultimately, he did look quite scary.

There's also a surprising amount of dialogue compared to similar films. Otherwise, the film looked good.

Quite a long film, but still worth seeing.

Godzilla is always endearing. His walk, his tiny arms, that look, and the occasional asthma attack—what more could you ask for? I especially enjoyed the old Japanese films, with the absolute highlight being Kaijûtô no Kessen: Gojira no Musuko (1967).

While it's immediately clear that this modern Godzilla remains relatively authentic and hasn't copied his American cousin, the charm of yesteryear is somewhat lost. Only when Godzilla endures the usual fireworks and then unleashes his wrath on the Japanese does there reappear a moment of unbridled charisma. Add to that the music that accompanies every Godzilla film, and you've got a goosebump-inducing moment.

Another downside is that you'll be watching at least 50 minutes of interchangeable Japanese people discussing politics and a major disaster. It's actually quite relevant to the current coronavirus situation, but then Godzilla is still a bit more entertaining.

If Godzilla had been given more time and the mediocre actors less, I would have given it a higher score, but as it is, boredom is lurking and this is certainly not the strongest film in the Godzilla catalog.

For the few beautiful moments that the film contains and because Godzilla is quite an insane icon, I give this film a small pass.

Now showing on Film1
