Strange story that expresses the West's concern about the rise of Hitler. History would prove the authors right; war did indeed come. The letter presented to Thorndike must be the reason to invade England . A few exciting scenes and a bit of romance, that's all it takes to have a decent (anti-German) classic.

The beginning seemed rather contrived, but once on the run from the Germans the film gets going

and the exciting chase scenes follow each other in rapid succession.

The denouement in the cave is strong, but what follows as a final episode is unfortunately a small letdown.

Too bad, this film deserved a more positive ending.

Director Fritz Lang still had some issues to settle with the Nazis, but he had to do so from the Hollywood film factory. It goes a bit over-the-top here with bad German Bassie and Adriaan spies hunting Walter Pidgeon because he allegedly wanted to shoot the Führer. One scene in the subway that is reminiscent of Lang's classic films and a strong finale with a strange unnecessary propaganda piece attached to it. Not annoying, but unfortunately not to be taken completely seriously.
