La Noche de los Girasoles plot
"Gripping and superb!"
In a field of sunflowers, the lifeless body of a teenager is discovered. At the same time, a salesman follows the events on television, while in a small village in Castilla-León, the discovery of a pre-historic cave creates a lot of excitement. Meanwhile, the village chief contemplates retirement, while his son-in-law (and possible successor) seeks to escape the boredom of his job and marriage. Esteban, his girlfriend Gabi and wildlife photographer Pedro come to the village to investigate the cave, but they discover more than they would like.

Nice rural thriller that reminded me a bit of La Isla Mínima (2014). Carmelo Gómez plays the leading role here and is always strong in those types of settings. The film continues to fascinate and, by subtly introducing characters who have a different view of the story, you never know how this will end. A small 3.5*.

Ha, I didn't know the term rural thriller arno74, but it is quite appropriate. After all, there are more of them... Let me put it this way: I do appreciate the thrillers with "the rural areas" as a background (La Isla Mínima already mentioned).
I think of El Aura (2005) (Arg, forest) or Out of the Furnace (2013) (USA, mining town), Matar a un Hombre (2014) (Chile , forest): films that also provide a typical image of an environment. And also exciting... on a beautiful bay... although it might not be called a thriller: El Club (2015) (Chile ).
All films where I enjoy an exciting journey of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in a rural country.
In these films, the often peculiar characters really come into their own against an often dark, silent and ominous background. A combination that nourishes loneliness and tension. In the case of La Noche de los Girasoles, I really enjoyed the chapter-by-chapter structure. As expected, the "light" slowly goes out. A dark atmosphere is also palpable here. The actually non-threatening images - think of the old man- create tension. In the aforementioned example, the viewer is not the only one who is misled. I also find it very nice that there doesn't really seem to be a main character in the "whole" story. And then that ending: an open ending and an encore during the end credits : wonderful, the tension remains.

The countryside as a backdrop indeed has something to it. Within every genre. The culture and attitude of the residents lend themselves to looking at it with a romantic or mysterious feeling. Horror is also well expressed here. And then we are not even talking about the often very beautiful images of à la campaign, which conveys a holiday feeling for the average tourist, but is certainly not the case for the local resident who feels more trapped in all that empty space.
All kinds of little sub-stories are interwoven, some more related than others. And this in a non-linear structure. Not everything is always clear. A film or story that lives mainly under the skin and must be experienced. Being abandoned suddenly can leave an unfinished disjointed feeling. Still, I had the feeling that Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo knew what he was doing.
