Perhaps expectations were too high. The film has enough beautifully shot scenes, a beautiful leading lady, an interesting plot, and the tattoo is surprising.

Yet the many, lengthy 'wrestling scenes' with 1 knife + 2 moaning (if you closed your eyes, you thought you were in some porn movie) people got on my nerves at one point. "Here we go again," and my zap thumb made its way back to the volume knob to mute the sound. Three stars.

I've only just started watching Yasuzō Masumura's films. I like what I've seen of him so far. They are generally somewhat bitter, not to say grim dramas that do not leave you unmoved. This is also the case with this revenge film, again with a varied role by Ayako Wakao. I've seen five of her films so far and for now I come to the conclusion that she is one of the best actresses in Japanese cinema from the 50s and 60s.
