Contrary to the plot description above, the main character is not Carole Landis but Carroll Levis (playing himself, the host of a sort of radio talent show) who becomes involved in the hunt for a Maltese falcon—I mean, a little brass monkey that is apparently worth so much that human lives are sacrificed for it. The problem is that Levis himself cannot compensate for his lack of acting experience in any way with any form of charisma—even Avril Angers as his empty-headed secretary, who is supposed to provide the comic relief, steals the show, and because the plot isn't much to speak of either, the villains are given almost free rein. And fortunately, they are not just anyone, because Campbell Cotts, Herbert Lom, and Edward Underdown form a fine bunch whom I sometimes half-hoped would play a trick on that goofy Levis. Add to that the presence of Ernest Thesiger, whose true intentions you never quite know, Terry-Thomas, who gets to sing a song and deliver some slapstick with foreign accents over the radio microphone, a main villain whose identity truly surprised me, and last but most certainly not least, the stunning Carole Landis, and you end up with a film that turned out to be quite entertaining thanks to the "side events." But as far as Carroll Levis is concerned, I am glad that his career on the silver screen remained limited to two titles, and I do not believe I need to go looking for The Depraved (1957) (despite that truly alluring title).
