Wayne's world, Waynes's world, Party time, Excellent!

Wonderful cult piece about the half-baked Wayne and Garth, who encounter a whole series of very funny side characters in the wacky story full of references to other films - Robert Patrick's cameo had me laughing again, for example. Rob Lowe is also playing one of his better roles as the scary slippery record boss, Tia Carrere is mostly herself and very, very nice, then Meat Loaf, Ed O'Neill and Alice Cooper. Always a joy to see. Maybe not the most pompous story ever, but a very clear distance from the average Hollywood comedy.

In my memory Wayne's World was always hilarious, but some comedies turn out to be a little less witty than you thought. I mainly see comedians trying a little too hard here and that rarely results in anything hilarious. Mike Myers visibly struggles to be funny, while having to play the least fun character of the two; he is the Adriaan/Bert/Ernst of the duo, who must also be the hero of the story. Carvey is a bit more witty, but the duo is actually outplayed by very short supporting roles, which are much funnier. Ed O'Neill, for example, is a hundred times funnier in his few seconds than Mike Myers's one and a half hour of crazy pelvis. Just like a Rob Lowe, Kurt Fuller or Alice Cooper. There are quite a few sympathetic jokes in the film, but it is also often too stupid and childish.

Go ahead, 3 stars.

Entertaining.

The first 5 minutes I feared the worst. Mike Myers and certainly his companion are quite annoying. Singing Bohemian Rhapsody isn't exactly funny to me either. Not sure if that's actually meant to be funny. Either way, the 1990s feel of course oozes and I've seen just enough of that decade (and rebroadcasts of 90ies series, etc.) to see its charm. Small things like the Robert Patrick-cameo are a bit gratuitous, but they are successful. The film is also not too long, so as a bite-sized chunk eventually worth the effort.
