Another "wtf did I just see?" movie. Set in the early 20th century in Slack Bay, just north of Boulogne. Wonderfully absurdist comedy (for adults) about the coexistence of a family of wealthy people where inbreeding is a long tradition, and a family of cannibalistic mussel pickers. A Laurel & Hardy-like duo investigates a series of disappearances in the bay, but don't worry, the caricature of all those wacky characters, the Van Peteghem family in the lead, is central to the film. Add to that an equally strange romantic accent between the son (or is it a daughter?) Billie and the fisherman's son "Ma Loute" and it gets even more bizarre.

I do agree with McSavah : Binoche in a role that doesn't suit her at all. Fortunately, Luchini, who I normally find terrible, is better than I'm used to from him. The main attraction is the beautiful postcard setting of the baie de la Slack, which was optimally used to frame all this craziness. In the end, with the flying commissioner I thought it went a bit too far. It certainly won't be everyone's cup of tea, but you can't ignore the fact that Dumont knows how to create a separate mini-universe

What a crazy film, this "Ma Loute" which mainly sketches a frivolous, childlike, superficial and haughty bourgeoisie on the one hand and a brutal, raw and above all shocking working-class family on the other.
You can shred the film and you can also enjoy some fun, such as the characters individually : the drowsy cousin (or is it brother-in-law) Christian, who has a homemade English, the meek and little knowing father, André (played by a hard-to-recognize Fabrice Luchini), the clumsy mother, Isabelle (played by ex-presidential aide, Valerie Bruni Tedeschi, (it's been a while since I've seen them but still as talented), or the hysterical sister, Aude, (Juliette Binoche) or Inspector Machin (stands for "dingske") who symbolizes the unwieldy and ineptness of the police force and finally floats in its supposed success.
Don't mind the overacting, because it will have been commissioned and Juliette Binoche has no problem with that.
Often beautiful images, colorful and a good final scene in which the motley crew indulges themselves and the inevitable separation between the two classes is once again suggested.

After P'tit Quinquin, this is the second film by Bruno Dumont that I have watched and it is again a bull's eye for me.

Wonderful art house film with absurd situations, slapstick and characters that sometimes resemble characters from paintings by Hieronymus Bosch. The landscapes are beautiful and it is a relief compared to recent cinema that shots are sometimes taken from fixed camera angles that last several seconds. For me personally, this is a masterpiece.
