An exceptionally atmospheric film that, however, lasts too long to hold your undivided attention.

Romance between poker player/adventurer Jack Weil and revolutionary Bobby Duran is well portrayed. Period is also well captured, you can see that quite a lot of money has been spent on the set, classic cars and general decoration.

As said, this film would have benefited from being kept half an hour shorter. Now it became a bit too long to sit through, which made you long for the end. All in all, still just 3*.

Nice film in which a professional card player helps the wife of a Cuban revolutionary. This love drama takes place during the Cuban revolution. And these two elements are here technically well acquired with each other, if it were not for the fact that the romance sometimes takes over a bit too much. Robert Redford is well cast in this last collaboration with Sydney Pollack. The film could easily have been a bit shorter.

On paper this should have been a brilliant film - Pollack as director, with a magnificent cast led by Redford and Olin, and the setting in sun-drenched Cuba, with all the cigar and old car romance that goes with it. But nothing comes of it, there is no spark, no sparkle. And then there is the tugging whiny music in the soundtrack. Very meh all.

Perhaps the film can be seen as a remake of Cuba - but even though that film has some flaws, it is still ten times better than this misconception.

I believe it's the least of Pollack's films I've seen so far.
