Impressive... and depressing. Jolie shows that she can play very naturally. We are here worrying (rightly) about the state of democracy... in countries like Pakistan you are not even sure of your life, and the question is whether it will ever get better. Do not think so.

Call me insensitive but it didn't do much for me, bonding with the characters was minimal, only at the end there are a few scenes that touched me a bit but in general I thought this was very average. Far too many names and characters also that come at you, half of which are undoubtedly only mentioned once in the entire film. A bit messy in short.

broke.

I have every respect for the real Mariane Pearl, and of course it's terrible what she went through. And of course respect for Daniel Pearl and his fate. But here again, I judge the film by the film itself, not whether it is a true story or not.

In terms of direction, it really doesn't look like anything at all. Not a single shot that managed to charm me just a little, and sometimes even show complete ignorance. Especially during the so-called "exciting" scenes, choices are made that are ridiculous. Winterbottom and thriller don't look too strong.

Jolie is also really horrible. A successful transformation that they allowed her to continue, but couldn't they have chosen a Cuban/African actress? Apparently Winterbottom thought it necessary to let the most American actress go under the make-up for a while.

Jolie also seems to show little interest in her role or really get involved in it. Maybe she was interested in it, but I can't read it here. Forced drama scenes, horribly bad accent (what was the point of that accent, they are accents mixed up), and no emotional impact at all.

Also extremely uninteresting and dull portrayed. Visually bare and incomplete in all areas. So-called romantic and subtle flashbacks to push the impact down a bit more, but it doesn't impress me at all.

No, really didn't like it at all. Still a nice look and atmosphere, the locations are well used. If the film sometimes shows some rawer images, it certainly doesn't look bad. For that I will still hand out points, and out of sympathy for the idea of the film and respectable way of storytelling I also award some extras.
