Beetlejuice plot
"In this house... if you've seen one ghost... you haven't seen them all."
Barbara and Adam Maitland are involved in a serious car accident. When they come home they realize that they are actually no longer alive. Their house is sold and the new owners want to turn it into an eccentric building. The Maitlands have a hard time with this and realize that they can terrify the new owners like ghosts. But they soon realize that life after death is not so simple. If they want to ghost, they will first have to learn how it works. Even though they get Juno's help, the new owners turn out to be quite capable of dealing with gruesome noises and strange powers. The Maitlands become desperate and enlist the help of Beetlejuice, a ghost who can transform into a terrible monster.

Beetlejuice is kind of the stereotypical movie that Tim Burton is known for; hysterical fairytale-like horror comedies with a big nod to the old B-movies, so with a lot of stop-motion and cardboard. While - if you look at his entire oeuvre - he made relatively few of these kinds of films, this is typical Burton. It's creative and insane, but at the same time exhausting. In terms of style, the film is interesting, the stop-motion and the score by Danny Elfman, for example, give the film something magical. But in terms of story and narration, the film does nothing and mainly presents us screamingly a lot of 'things' without a clear line. Dance numbers, big worms in the desert and a very hyperactive Michael Keaton invariably alternate and that's fun for a while, but eventually gets boring and after 85 minutes you're glad that the film is over. The film is similar to Betelgeuse's character in that respect; for a while it is interesting and entertaining, but not much later you are suddenly really done with it.

Entertaining. Beetlejuice is really a Tim Burton movie. Strange, quirky and extravagant, with excellent acting from Keaton, Davis, Baldwin and the other actors. Beetlejuice is a horror comedy, but one with some very strange scenes. The last shot of Winona Ryder dancing symbolizes the entire film and the atmosphere Burton wants to create. You have to be able to handle it, but I totally went along with it. This is also due to the energetic acting of the actors, who clearly enjoy playing their roles.

Bizarre film by Burton. A macabre gothic ghost comedy full of absurd moments and special effects. You really have to love it because laughing with the dead and the afterlife is not for everyone. When it comes to humor things don't go so well; it's not really an asshole and Keaton tries in vain a lot of grimaces to still get the viewer in a dent. He exaggerates too much and therefore achieves just the opposite effect. The humor may be a miss, but the overall universe around the house of the Maitlands and the Deetzes gave me a lot of energy to sit through this.
