Beetlejuice Beetlejuice plot

When a tragic event occurs, three generations of the Deetz family come together. Lydia Deetz feels a deep bond with the supernatural and sees the ghost Beetlejuice again, who tormented her as a child. He still wants to marry her and that plan would rather go ahead today than tomorrow when his dead wife rises and chases him. Meanwhile, Lydia's daughter, teenage Astrid, starts a relationship.

Lydia [Winona Ryder] has made a career as a host of a show about haunted houses. After the death of her father, she returns with her mother [Catherine O'Hara], her daughter [Jenna Ortega] and her boyfriend Rory [Justin Theroux] to the house where Beetlejuice [Michael Keaton] caused a commotion more than 30 years ago. From that moment on, Lydia has nightmares about her tormentor and when Rory does the unthinkable, all hell breaks loose again. A somewhat confusing plot with Monica Bellucci as the demon on duty, but Burton is seduced by an excess of CGI effects. Winona Ryder returns to her role without any problems, but 70-something Keaton is a shadow of his former self. An uninspired and completely unnecessary sequel and proof that even Tim Burton is not flawless

Less crazy than in '88, but still a very solid sequel. However, Burton lets himself be tempted too much to blindly import his success with Wednesday (and therefore Ortega) here. The added storylines with Bellucci and Dafoe are actually footnotes and unnecessary, Burton forgets to work out his sidesteps. This results in a film in which all the stars have to seize their moment, it does not help to make it a consistent whole.

Furthermore, this is quite okay for me, everything just looks good. Beetlejuice's screentime remains limited, Keaton does not shine as before, but he remains a fun and crazy character. His range of action may remain a bit too limited. Ryder and O'Hara pick up their roles quite flawlessly, Ortega is a good addition in such films. The other members of the cast in '88 were not possible to return for understandable reasons . Jones is dead, the Maitlands 'moved on'. The sadness about 'grandpa Deetz' falls on a cold stone .

It is confusing and goes in all directions at times, but that is fitting. The references to the previous film are more than numerous, the nostalgia extremely present. Enjoyed the first part? Then you will probably appreciate this one too.

Tonight I saw the movie together with friends; I think this movie is (almost) better than the original. A worthy successor to the original from 1988. It keeps the feeling of the first movie and, oh Bob, how I will miss you.
