30 Days of Night plot

"They're Coming!"

The isolated town of Barrow, Alaska, is plunged into complete darkness for 30 days each winter. During this period, many residents seek refuge elsewhere. This winter, a mysterious group of aliens, vampires, settle in the town. They prepare to feast on the remaining inhabitants during the uninterrupted night-of-30-days. The sheriff (Josh Hartnett), his wife Stella (Melissa George) and an ever-shrinking group of residents will have to pull out all the stops to survive until dawn.

revised.

I even liked it a bit better compared to the first time, which was only 2 years ago. At the time, this was a very cool film with a setting that was right up my alley. It still is, only I could enjoy it even more. As far as I'm concerned Slade's magnum opus so far.

Slade does a really great job on this one visually. The whole town is very attractively decorated and the look is convincing time and again. The nighttime images of snowy houses look weirdly menacing. It is not presented subtly, by the way, because there is a lot of bombast, but Slade also hits the brakes at the right moments.

Acting is certainly decent too. Hartnett does a good job in the lead role, the rest is a bit off but is certainly not annoying. Still, Foster and Huston, who come into the picture a little more limited, are the show stealers. Huston does a really great job as a villain, and plays quite apart. Something different than what I normally see in terms of villains.

Lots of action and bombast, but never in the way that it gets boring. Slade keeps his soundtrack perfectly straight, and lets the images themselves do the work. Camera work is very appropriate and the cinematography of a high level. There is also some strong gore incorporated in it and you're good to go.

Sometimes there is just not enough with scenes that you can do great things with. That slaughter with the drill, for example, that could have lasted a little longer. Maybe the gore could have been more explicit, but there is little to complain about this film. Appropriate ending, cool action and a lot that just works. And that with a film that takes itself pretty seriously. I enjoyed it, and increase my grade by half.

Nice review.

A film that is slowly establishing itself as a genre classic. Not so much because of the original vampires or the exceptional direction, but because of the great setting and the atmosphere that Slade manages to extract from it. An ideal film to watch on a cold winter evening, provided that you can curl up nice and warm on your couch inside.

It is certainly a simpler film than Hard Candy, but those looking for pure horror work will be more than entertained. I'm not a big vampire fan myself, but Slade knows how to make something fun out of it. They reminded me more of distant relatives from Boyle's 28 Days Later zombies than the classic Gothic vampires you usually see.

The actors do a good job (especially Huston leaves a positive impression), the bit of gore is quite effective and the atmosphere is good from start to finish. It is certainly not a film that surprises, certainly not the second time, but that is not really the intention with these kinds of films. Strong genre work by Slade.

4.0* and a extended review
