Le salaire de la peur was a totally unknown film to me. Thanks to Cinema Canvas, we were able to watch this mini-classic by Henri-Georges Clouzot. In the beginning I had some trouble with the movie which starts very slow. It's actually from the ride with the explosives that it starts to get interesting.

Two duos drive through the jungle to deliver their stuff. This is not without danger and many obstacles cross their path. Especially the magic between Mario and Mr. Jo is very touching and funny. During the road trip, their true natures, especially that of the frightened Mr. Yo, upstairs. Mario, on the other hand, is the brash macho who sees how it ends. The tension during the road trip is great and keeps the viewer on the edge of his seat. For example, the boulder, the mud pool and the suspension bridge are very nice scenes.

The film is not always believable and when dealing with the nitroglycerin one is not always very consistent. Apparently there would also be a colored version, but the black and white didn't bother me in the least. The ending was also fine and surprising, completely in the image of Mario actually.

I saw Les Diaboliques many years ago and only now Clouzot's greatest classic, partly because of my top 250 project. This one is a bit more complete. Where Les Diaboliques was a Hitchcockian thriller, this film has a simple premise but quite a few extra layers. There is a distinctly anti-colonial layer to it and the film is almost activist socialist and the film takes ample time to paint that backdrop full of adventurous men who shortly after the war ended up desperately in the middle of nowhere, where they had a hard time getting out. can come and what they risk their lives for. Also both the male camaraderie and the male competition are very well portrayed.

A very pessimistic film full of despair, by the way. Liked it very much. The Friedkin remake is also still here. And I'm curious about that too.

Less exciting adventure film than I thought I remembered, but seventy years later still an entertaining film. After reviewing I come to the conclusion for myself that I find the introductory part in the village at least as beautiful as the spectacular car ride, because it is more varied.
