Owen Deveraux [Glenn Ford], as a general in the American Civil War, ignored the white flag of an enemy unit and let them be ruthlessly slaughtered. Despite this, he enjoys a reputation as a war hero that led to his appointment as a judge after the war. But Owen is still haunted by the demons of his bloody wartime past, especially when he's confronted by the lone survivor of the carnage who threatens to destroy his reputation. Del Stewart [William Holden], an old friend, is determined to help Owen come to terms with his past and come to terms with himself.

It's interesting to see Ford in an unsympathetic role and he plays a convincing role. Holden is good, but less interesting than the friend. There are some good action scenes in this western with interesting references to the problems and dealings with WWII veterans.

I'm not really a fan of Glenn Ford and he doesn't seem out of place here either. The movie has a nice premise. A questionable colonel who is respected by his soldiers, but gradually loses his moral compass at the end of the war. The soldiers are given a festive welcome after the war, after which civilian life begins. The colonel's conscience continues to gnaw and he is gradually losing the respect he had as an officer as a judge. The abuse of power will take its toll.

Hollywood craftsmanship and interesting to see. But it will never be more and the main characters have little charisma. It is one of those many westerns from its time. Too bad, because there could have been more in this.

And on the Sunday afternoon after yesterday's The Devil's Brigade again at William Holden with this The Man From Colorado. A film that I took a chance at the thrift store because apart from the name Holden it was an unknown film to me.

And The Man From Colorado makes a strong impression from the start with the end of the Civil War and a number of unpopular decisions and the conclusion that not everyone comes out of the war fresh. And I have to say that I think the movie is pretty heavy on subject for a '48 movie with the character Devereaux struggling with the war, remorse, trauma and going too far in punishment probably with flags, parties and uniforms still in mind, because he it mainly caters to old soldiers. And slowly the tension rises with the aftermath of the war and the unfair treatment of the soldiers who are going to rebel. And let there be the pinch with Devereaux who clearly wants to uphold the law but immediately wants to quell mutiny and not just lose his head.

And so The Man From Colorado develops as a film with western elements that mainly carries everything from a modern kind of drama, such as the aftermath of the war in the form of psychological problems, but also distrust, jealousy, love affairs and a battle. between good and evil. And it is all well presented and there is also great acting, especially by Holden. Strong is the friction that slowly arises between Devereaux and Stewart, resulting in high play and a decent and fairly grand finale for a film from '48. And so The Man From Colorado more than surprises me and the film gets a stable 3.5 and the film is definitely nominated for a review in the long term.
