16-year-old high school student and amateur photographer Charles accidentally takes some photos of a rock singer, 23-year-old Laura. When he develops the photos, he immediately falls in love with her. He goes to visit her, and finds out that she is singing with her band in a bar, but that they are about to be fired. Charles and Laura have an affair, and Charles devises a plan to help Laura; he sets up an advertising campaign to raise money...

An amateur photographer falls in love with an aspiring singer when she happens to enter his lens. It is what you might expect from this type of film: teen romance and some corny humor; the film blossoms beautifully, especially in the second half. The wedding where they arrive as "freeloaders" and the whole quid pro quo surrounding the photo on the taxis ultimately make it quite enjoyable. I watched this film primarily for Demi Moore, as I had seen few of her films before her career peak in the 90s. I also found Jon Cryer to be better than I initially thought.

What a brilliantly fun movie this is, and how unjustly forgotten—arguably Demi Moore's first 'real' film, Ducky before he became Duckie, EG Daily from before Say It Say It, George Wendt before the kilos, Tim Robbins before, before, before I don't know what. And Jennifer Tilly.
While Matthew Broderick was supposed to play the lead role according to plan—was anyone confused enough to think it was him, instead of Cryer? You'd get confused by less. And Ellen Barkin as the singer instead of Sally Field, thankfully they found Demi for that.
And how could this not have become a blockbuster back then? Incomprehensible. With cinematography by the best DOP in film history, Vilmos Zsigmond. A story that is so human, relatable, and at the same time funny. And above all, so many improbably beautiful quotes in the text. A godsend for the critic, you would think, but no, as if vinegar were on sale. I’ll just quote from Wikipedia, according to the Christian Science Monitor: "cares more about capturing the visual charms of San Francisco than smoothly unfolding the happy-sad story. The result is friendly but bland"—I have never disagreed with anything so much. Incomprehensible.
Certainly all fans of Moore should see this film. And all fans of Zsigmond. Everyone who has an affinity for the 80s or the obvious popular films from that era. And everyone else, really.
