In En Effeuillant la Marguerite (1956) there was at least some comedy, and Bardot actually showed a flair for that. That is an ultra-tame and rather old-fashioned film with a single "oh la la" moment that even the most conservative grandma wouldn't take offense at. Quite sleep-inducing. With the worst-looking Prince Charles of all time (he wishes he looked like Charles Boyer).

BB #19

Brigitte Bardot dans Une Parisienne

It is on screen for a few seconds in extreme capital letters. Has BB achieved her status as a diva with this film, then? Has she broken through to the status of goddess and global star? Perhaps not quite yet, because right before that there is an earlier, equally large slide for Charles Boyer and Henri Vidal. As if the film is about them instead of BB. Well, at least she gets to steal the show with her little red car with the convertible top.

With that, the film immediately dives into what I find really great about it—the streetscape of Paris in the 1950s. Unfortunately, that doesn't last long, and the usual lame farce unfolds, lacking funny jokes, interesting characters, decent acting performances, or remarkable visuals. Well, except for that plane, that is, however briefly it is on screen. And the Constellation, too. The end of the era of beautiful airplanes, when they were still gleaming and shiny.

Aside from that, it is yet another very lazy and bland production. In that respect, too, the poster promises much more than is delivered.
