En Cas de Malheur plot

The female instinct (Brigitte Bardot) turns out to be as unerringly predictable as the male behavior: in the hotel room, the respected lawyer (Jean Gabin) goes for the ax, heralding his irrevocable decline.

Strong acting performance by Jean Gabin and especially Brigitte Bardot, as a naive and playful young girl, in this fine Simenon adaptation.

I had already seen "L'Auberge Rouge" and "La Traversée de Paris" by Claude Autant-Lara from that period, but this "En Cas de malheur," although the plot does not seem very original (the wealthy older gentleman entering into an affair with a young woman of humble origins and being presented with the bill for it), is in no way inferior in quality.

BB #21

BB as a femme fatale.

Finally, a film with BB that tries to be just a little more than a lame and shallow farce—a decent story by Simenon, and with Jean Gabin, a decent actor opposite her. And that simply results in a solid film, an old-fashioned French drama without Hollywood-style silliness.

It is in black and white again, but that is done so skillfully that it actually looks better in color, and certainly the kind of washed-out colors that films from that era often had—or have now, after seventy years or so.

Beautiful atmospheric shots of the city – from the smoking chimneys on the Quai de Javel to Maître Gobillot’s gleaming car. Unfortunately, the majority of the scenes are indoors. Naturally, that includes the scene the film is famous for – yes, for a second or two, BB skips stark naked through the frame.

Apart from that moment, she is at her most beautiful, and her acting is also better than in the earlier films, perhaps with the exception of EDCLF. It is also a stark contrast to #20 Les Bijoutiers du Clair de Lune, where she was quite clearly not at ease. How different this film is because of that.
