Finally seen. A very moving and beautiful film. There was even a hint of Prison Break in it. Recommended.

A Flemish film based on true events usually produces a qualitative combination. This time too, because De hel van Tanger is the harrowing story of a Flemish trucker who is innocently jailed for drug smuggling. Prison doesn't seem fun to me anyway, but a Tangier-type prison in a similar "regime" must be hell. Add to that the (diplomatic) bureaucratic paper mill, not to mention the hypocrisy and corruption that is rampant and you know you are a bird for the cat.

The last images of the film especially stay with me the most. The heavily emotionally shaken Marcel who comes home. Not über-sentimental, but catchy and strikes the right chord. But the cell has also cut into him physically. In any case, a very strong performance by Filip Peeters, about the best I've seen from him on screen. It is a pity that too little attention was paid to the character of Axel Daeseleire. Warre Borgmans is also in good shape as always.

The film was shot for the most part in the fortress of Liezele, one of the fortresses of the defense belt around Antwerp during the First World War. Excellent location to outline the gray and damp location. It immediately gives you that uneasy, cramped feeling of misery and despair. Not very innovative in itself compared to other prison films, but quite unique on Flemish soil and that alone deserves praise.

Joins the better Belgian films. Gripping story of a defrauded bus driver who is innocently sentenced to five years in a Moroccan prison for drug smuggling. While his health in the cell deteriorates due to TB, his relatives try to help him in every way possible. Based on true events and with a Filip Peeters who lost no less than 35 kg for his role of Marcel Van Loock. His companion Wim Moreels was actually a sad case : no relatives on the home front who supported him, Moroccans smoke cigarettes and then have to serve his full sentence. Maybe they should make another Hell of Tanger 2 about him... Also typically Belgian about this film is the expected complaining and whining at home about failing bureaucracy, regulatory nonsense, government incompetence... it is always the fault of the politics huh
