American through and through.

It's really awful how it all works. All those forbidden shots and the annoying editing make it really unpleasant to watch.

Mark Wahlberg again plays the plank of wood that can only grumble, very annoying. I also found the blond chick he meets a bit typical.

The training sessions (in which a so-called 'nice number' is always thrown in), the coaching of the coach, the relationship problems... it's just not worth anything. And the final game against the Cowboys is of course completely according to plan: the Eagles are ahead, come behind and eventually win.

That sepia tone or whatever really didn't look right. Such a yellow glow... like it was 30 degrees continuously.

American flag.

Bad.

Nice sports biography that stays neatly within the lines.

The story is simple and is presented simply.

Of course with the necessary sugary clichés.

Where Wahlberg shows he can carry a movie on his own,

Kinnear in particular lets it down quite a bit.

Too bad, because a role as a coach is crucial in these kinds of films.

All in all, neat, and unfortunately no more than that. *3.0

Your seats are going to be so much better than ours this year.

Surprisingly nice film that is of course predictable, and follows most of the rules of a feel-good, but still strikes me as pleasant and engaging.

The era is beautifully portrayed, excellent styling and beautiful color filters. Also the somewhat grubby quality of the match shown in the beginning, which really feels 70s with a certain color scheme. Interesting are Vermeil's first steps at the Eagles and the try outs that are presented with a lot of humor. Papale manages to do it against all odds, which is of course not surprising, so the film should not rely on that. Of course that has to come from the characters and the storytelling, and the film more than succeeds in that. What helps in my eyes is a really unparalleled list of music that I looked up on Spotify this afternoon during my work. Even my colleagues were amazed at the amount of good music in this movie with Jim Groce, Steely Dan, Dobie Gray, Ace, Edgar Winter and Ted Nugent just to name a few.

Downsides...? Mmm... it must all be a bit romanticized. Papale really played football at a lower level, he says not. I also find her game with his mates a bit too rough to be realistic. And it doesn't go very deep, not even when he is abandoned by his girlfriend in the beginning. The biggest downside is that the game breakthrough and the success that comes late and feels rushed. But in all honesty, it's details that pretty much disappear from the entertaining and engaging film. Invincible is not an Oscar winner, but the film is very nice.
