Remember the Titans plot

"History is written by the winners."

Virginia, 1971. In the small town of Alexandra, everything revolves around high school football. When the school board is forced to merge an all-black and all-white school, the community shakes to its foundations. That doesn't change when Alexandria-unknown young black coach Herman Boone is appointed head coach of the TC Williams Titans. In fits and starts, he and the somewhat older Bill Yoast try to transform a group of angry, disinterested boys into a dynamic winning team.

A sports drama based on true events about a high school football team characterized by racial hatred. The story is perhaps a bit predictable because you can broadly suspect how this film will go, yet the effect is strong with the necessary emotions and friendships. The film is no more than reasonable for a long time but the fraternization and the friendships and total acceptance of both skin colors ensure that towards the end, the feeling becomes stronger and stronger that Remember the Titans is stronger than the average sports drama. The roles are well filled, especially by Denzel Washington.

I was very disappointed, even though the story isn't that bad, I found the Disney sauce too overpowering. It's all too exaggerated, too American and too moralizing. Of course also too good and very predictable. And then there's the heroic music, I almost had to grab a tub. Terrible!

“This is no democracy. It's a dictatorship. I am the law.”

Remember the Titans is a film with a good balance between sports, racial issues and drama, but it is also a film with a lot of humor and fun. It's nice to see some famous heads among the young actors (Gosling), but it is Washington who impresses the most here. Also Patton, Harris, Hurst and Panettiere as precocious daughter of Patton are very strong. Titans is first and foremost a sports film, with the deeper layer forging a super team made up of white and black students. Something that was an exception in America at the time.

It is interesting to see the young men working together more and more, and eventually deep friendships develop. It's sentimental (especially towards the end), but director Yakin is wary of false sentiment. Above all, the film remains an impressive and heartfelt story about coaches and students who want nothing more than to play American Football together, but swim against the current and have to overcome many obstacles.
