Nice idea, poor execution. A lot of time is taken to tell the story and to let the puzzle pieces fall into place and as a result the film ripples along at many moments, without really grabbing the viewer. As a viewer you regularly lose attention, while with a film like this you should be more on the edge of your seat. But the most unfortunate thing is that as a viewer you get so much time to easily predict the already not so complicated climax. This conclusion quickly leaves you with a rather dissatisfied feeling. Fortunately, there are also positive sides to highlight, because the cast is fine. Especially Toni Colette plays a very strong role, while Joe Morton, Sandra Oh and Rory Culking also deliver excellent performances. Williams is also fine, but this is also allowed, the man is present in practically every shot. Finally, the atmosphere and music of Peter Nashel are not wrong and do their thing. Unfortunately, this thriller is otherwise not too satisfying, in my opinion there could have been something more in it.

2.5 stars.

Not as bad as the ratings suggest. A sober drama/thriller with mysterious features that manages to keep the attention due to the subtle tension, despite the straightforward and not too smooth story. Robin Williams neatly plays a subdued role and his homosexual relationship is not portrayed in Hollywood, which is nice too. The atmosphere is a bit on the dark side, the camera and imagery not special.

At the end you think the story could have been more in-depth. This is reinforced if it turns out to be a true story. With only 81 minutes on the clock (I also turned out to have seen an edited version) it really feels like a missed opportunity.

That last scene, why?! Cost the movie 1 star from my side. Furthermore, a nice mysterious film that becomes unpredictable due to its apparent predictability. Nicely put together, nice atmosphere, but that ending really didn't have to be.

2*
