At the time of release, this film had its grip on the Netherlands, finally another film from Dutch soil by our international director Paul Verhoeven, then you hope for a feature film of international allure that still retains a bit of its own identity, in other words, sometimes it has to be still a bit old-fashioned in the best Dutch tradition.
The film only manages to do that a little bit, just think of the scene in which the resistance fighters are preparing for an action, but of course there is always time for a drink. but for the rest this is a great feature film.
The story is reminiscent of the stories that emerged well after the war about the Velser affair and about King Kong Lindemans. The story develops well, despite the pace of the film. The acting performances are fine, except for 2. What on earth are those Zeelenberg and de Mol doing in this film, they are just as believable as Andre van Duin, who takes over the role of John Wayne in the Searchers.
I sometimes think they knew something about some producers or maybe Paul Verhoeven otherwise they would never have gotten a part.
The rest of the cast delivers excellent performances, with van Houten, Hofman, Koch and de Lint at the forefront.
The action is well dosed and believable, except for the moment when the traitor has to be shot, but that's no different, but it does make me not appreciate the film any higher. Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned, it would have come close to that other war film by Verhoeven, now it remains at a 3.5

Finally I can cross Black Book off my list. Very handsome and allegedly expensive production by Benelux standards. Zwartboek is somewhat in line with the other more recent Dutch films Süskind and Riphagen about WWII, resistance, betrayal and the persecution of the Jews.

Zwartboek has become an exciting and intriguing war film in which no effort has been spared in terms of action, set design, costumes, camera work and cinematography. The actress Carice Van Houten also did a great job and is the real star of the film. Understated, decisive and emotional, she gives the best of herself in the complex roles assigned to her character. Within a resistance movement it is self-evident that there is always one who is the mole, especially when you are propagating that coincidence does not exist. This keeps the film interesting from start to finish. The characters are not black and white and everyone has their own motives to act this way or that.

Verhoeven has made a realistic war film. Perhaps slightly different than he would have liked, but the result is quite impressive. Black Book is a beautiful war drama with a touch of unattainable love/romance. Not Schindler's list of The pianist, but that need not be a shame in the least.

I found Zwartboek, one of the best Dutch WWII films ever,

Good actors, tight acting, well filmed.

Storyline was great and if you haven't seen this movie yet and are you in doubt?

Just watch! He is certainly good enough.
