A.K. plot

Documentary about the making of the film Ran and the working method of director Akira Kurosawa. Especially the detail in Kurosawa's work comes to the fore. Marker is close to him during the long practice with the actors, after which it is recorded in 1 take. Kurosawa's personality is also discussed as a characteristic of his filmmaking.

The reviews here are mediocre, but I actually thought it wasn't too bad; a making of from a time when that wasn't very common yet, and unfortunately minus interviews with the makers (i.e. Kurosawa) explaining how they came up with the idea and what they mean by the film, but the footage from the set is intriguing enough nonetheless, especially the contrasts between old-fashioned samurai and archers on the one hand, and trucks and smoke machines (and the white Mercedes that "sensei" Kurosawa delivers to the set every morning) on the other. And I already thought the dust kicked up by those horses was remarkably white, but it turns out to be dry cement. By the end of the documentary, I almost get cold myself with all those images of mist, gloves, blankets, and fire pits. Perhaps not essential, but a nice addition to Ran itself. (I wasn't bothered by Marker's voice.)
