"I don't want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me."

The Departed is the third collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio and it is an absolute hit. Scorsese throws himself back into the world of the mafia and it's a pleasure to see that the man has not forgotten it yet. The story of a mole in the Boston Police Department and a mole in the organization of mob boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) who have to expose each other is very strong and the tension is constantly palpable. Scorsese keeps the momentum going and within fifteen minutes all the pawns are in place and the hard, ingenious and sometimes humorous story can begin. The violence is not shunned and the way Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) and Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) go about outsmarting each other is chilling, cunning and delivers many memorable scenes. Including DiCaprio, Damon and Nicholson, a group of actors has been gathered who know how to handle this material. Nicholson excels and manages to add another colorful character to his resume. With his charisma and talent he steals every scene. DiCaprio is very good and because of his hopeless situation radiates despair and helplessness but is also powerful, smart and decisive. Damon holds his own and is cunning, tough and loyal to Costello. Wahlberg is masterly and, like Alec Baldwin, provides a number of humorous moments. Martin Sheen, Vera Farmiga and Ray Winstone all put in strong performances as well.

The Departed culminates in an explosion of violence with an ending that intriguingly shows that no one can escape the milieu of death and destruction. And the viewer can finally breathe. Scorsese goes back to his roots and delivers a masterpiece.

Scorsese is a somewhat variable director for me, but sometimes he still manages to make gems. The Departed is not his first gangster film, here he goes for a story with a remake of Infernal Affairs. But then longer, less suspense and much too leaning on the plot instead of a decent scenario. It's not bad, but it does feel quite crowded and some things could have been left out. The cast is okay, but has done better. If you're into the genre, it's certainly not a bad movie, but much better movies have been made. The film also can't match the original and Scorsese doesn't do much with the remake either. Just make it fuller, which makes some things more like ballast than added value.

Excellent film about two cops who each have their own agenda. This remake is quite plot driven for a Scorsese film. But it's well put together and the characters are well developed. A strong cast certainly knows how to help with this. Fairly fast, but well assembled (you have to keep your attention there too).
