"What happens when make-believe believes it's real?"

In 1944, after General Franco's victory, 12-year-old Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) and her pregnant mother move to a rural area in northern Spain, where they come to live with Ofelia's strict and tough stepfather, Captain Vidal (Sergi Lopez). With his army, the ruthless Vidal fights against the rebels who live in the forests. In these dire circumstances, Ofelia encounters a mysterious faun one night. He tells her that she is actually a princess and that she can prove herself if she completes three important tasks.

I also follow Teejey and TornadoEF5 their opinion anyway. In terms of message, the film is clear: you could say that monsters live in a fantasy world, but the real monsters simply live in the real world. Captain Vidal is a beautiful personification of such a monster, it must be said. The film is nice and raw at times and I could taste that but something is just missing and I think that's mainly because I never really managed to develop a bond with the characters.

There are also moments like where Mercedes, so the woman who helps the rebels, gets the chance to kill Captain Vidal but she doesn't, simply because the Vidal still had a part to play in the end... That one too... scene with the monster with the eyes in his hands (how did they get it hehe) they would have done better in a different way than eating with those grapes, I thought that was childish. Besides, I didn't like it much the labyrinth, right left right left and more it seemed, the aspect of 'getting lost in a maze' is then lost.

All in all, the film is beautifully shot and the soundtrack has a nice tune that I will probably have forgotten tomorrow. So yeah, as far as I'm concerned it's overrated and I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected, maybe it's because of the generation gap I'm almost 23

Remains beautiful.

After several viewings, the surprising elements of the fantasy have faded a bit, but then it turns out that this film can also hold its own on a dramatic level. And so del Toro delivers a film where fantasy and drama complement each other perfectly.

Visually it is only the CG that shows some age, otherwise very beautiful and atmospheric shot. Soundtrack is a bit bland and could have had a little more spice and individuality, luckily the acting is on a high level. Not so obvious, with a 12-year-old lead actress and quite a bit of drama in between the fantasy.

A film that is also very easy to watch and has convinced a diverse audience. I am curious what del Toro has achieved with The Shape of Water, from a distance it looks a bit like this film, but until then this will clearly remain my favorite del Toro film.

Postponed a review for years, because I was afraid a second viewing would be disappointing. But no, the film is still rock solid. The creative alternation of fantasy images and the horrors of guerrilla warfare draw you to the edge of your seat from the first scenes. A fantastic film in several senses of the word, with great performances by the young Ivana Baquero and her opposite, the ruthless Sergi López. Maribel Verdú never disappoints as far as I know. A masterpiece in my humble opinion.
