Water en Vuur, Roerige Geschiedenis van Marinus van der Lubbe (1909-1934) plot

Water and Fire is a reconstruction of the turbulent life of the Dutch communist Marinus van der Lubbe. On February 27, 1933, the 24-year-old bricklayer was arrested in the burning Reichstag in Berlin. A dubious process ensued. Although he was known in Leiden as a combative communist, he was a tragic figure at the hearing who mainly kept silent with his head bowed. Since the mysterious fire was the first impetus for a seizure of power for Nazi Germany, rumors quickly spread. Did Van der Lubbe work for the Nazis or did he oppose the emerging Nazism? Using audio recordings of the trial, film fragments, songs, photos, diary fragments and conversations with some of the living contemporaries, a story is told in which reality, fiction, truth and lies intertwine.
