Fine.

I've seen quite a few Cheh Chang films lately that don't immediately conform to his signature style. You might wonder if his style is truly so distinctive, but when you've directed nearly 100 films, it's not surprising that there are 20 oddballs among them. That still leaves 80 others that do follow the familiar formula.

This is truly a typical Chang film. Rebellion, revenge, a historical setting, and plenty of martial arts. All with a typical Shaw Bros. twist. The typical faces and classic sets, in other words. I really wanted to see this again, and it didn't disappoint.

You certainly shouldn't expect anything original here, and it's not exactly top-notch either. But I did enjoy it quite a bit. It's fast-paced, doesn't take too long, has plenty of action, and the recent remasters make it all a bit more enjoyable to watch. I've come a long way in Chang's oeuvre, but I'm still not halfway there. I don't really mind that much.

When Tiger and Crane style unite!

I rewatched this classic kung fu film. I rented it on VHS a few times with my dad, and we both loved it.

The film debut of the charismatic Alexander Fu Sheng, who plays a Chinese patriot hero. He is framed by the Manchus and helps them capture another patriot hero named Hung Si-kuan. Later, he learns from other Chinese rebels that he has made a crucial mistake and risks his life to free Hung. The fights and music are also excellent.
