A film that starts with a nice tune but then had to get going for half an hour. After that it gets better and better and still looks nice. Shallow Grave is certainly not a high-flyer but entertaining enough every now and then. I liked the soundtrack as far as it was present.

I do wonder how that money ended up under the kitchen floor? As far as I know, that doesn't appear in the film and it seems like a shame that Eccleston could hide that money unnoticed. I didn't find the characters very interesting and there wasn't much atmosphere in them either. However, it turns out a bit differently than I would have thought, so I wouldn't call it predictable. Also Mcgreggor who remains on the ground with that knife at the end is very strange. Can't anyone call an ambulance for that poor wretch haha? I also had to get used to the accents, but I got used to that pretty quickly. A nice snack.

Solid.

The first Boyle. At least, the first Boyle to be mentioned on MovieMeter, because for this film he also had experience directing various episodes of series. This was his real film debut. Boyle must be one of the few directors whose earlier and later style is right up my alley.

Shallow Grave is a bit smaller than the average Boyle movie and that makes sense, because there were limited resources available. Still, I'm amazed at how far Boyle still gets with this film. It is regularly quite atmospheric and there is already an eye on the visual detail. Beautiful scenes are created a number of times that easily exceed the average low budget 90s film.

Acting is good. The decay through paranoia is nicely displayed despite being predictable, but hey, you can't make these kinds of concepts unpredictable. I sometimes thought the subtle stylistism didn't go well with the clunky style, otherwise I have little to complain about this little film. There is a good pace, enough happening and has several surprises towards the end.

A bit of a shame that the film loses sight of its style in the middle part, otherwise Boyle seems to know very well what he is doing. Well acted, entertaining and sometimes atmospheric film that kept me entertained throughout the short running time. Boyle likes me, hasn't disappointed me for a moment. Haven't caught him failing yet so far.
