Nice film in which a number of strangers are invited to a large house. Based on a board game, but it might as well have been based on a play (one location and a handful of actors). Moreover, the whole is quite theatrical set up. The many endings detract a bit from the whole, and therefore just under 3.5 stars.

Amusing.

Hard to make more of. It's admirable to take a game as the starting point for a movie, and while Cluedo as a premise naturally has a lot in common with an average detective; in the elaboration you also notice that every now and then they want to process the elements of the game frantically.

Someone is dead (the name Mr. Body is a nice find) and a motive is of course desirable for the film, that is well taken care of by means of the blackmail. Then the game dictates a threefold mystery and although the 'who' part is easily taken care of, the possible weapons (with what? The metal tube, the candlestick, piece of rope etc.) are already a bit perfunctory involved. The third part (where?) is possibly even more confusing, because some tricks have to be done to make it a mystery.

The mutual entanglements and relationships are logically far-fetched and the tone of the whole is rightly not taken too seriously, with more emphasis on humor than tension. Like a farce on stage boards, you quickly forgive the film for the overly acted roles and messy execution. Strangely enough, the most exaggerated role (that of Curry as the butler) still manages to keep it all together.

Things get a little out of hand at the end, especially considering the triple ending, which is just a weakness. But there is nothing wrong with a light-hearted interpretation of a murder mystery. Certainly not when the furnishings and decors are as neat as here. 3*

A very nice comic mystery with all good acting performances (except for Mr. Boddy). It is indeed very reminiscent of Murder by Death (1976), another classic.

"Communism was just a red herring."
