Two and a half hour. That's two and a half hours too long. Halfway through the film I started drinking to make it a bit more bearable.

The film is a succession of absurdist, dirty (I don't think it's really horror) moments. A run that takes far too long. After 1 hour and 20 minutes something finally happens. And yes, the setting is nice, and it's nice that it's all set in daylight, but that's no excuse for going so slowly through a movie. However absurd some things are, you can see most of them coming from a kilometer or three.

Hate it or love it. Clear hate it.

What an incredibly nice review this was!

This time I went for the almost 3 hour director's cut. And yes, I can wholeheartedly recommend this cut for fans. This movie flew forward again and it was super exciting. It goes a bit deeper and shows an extra ritual. Perhaps the only downside was that it kept circling around Dani and Christian's relationship a bit too much, making it a bit one-sided at times. And yet you also learn some extras in the long version.
But the extra ritual is astonishing as hell and has an intensive side. And also winks at the end to what happened to Connie.

The works of Ari Aster are clearly not for everyone. I often have the feeling that I experience the film very differently than the many reactions I read and hear. This film is simply packed for the observant viewer. And that contributes a lot to the atmosphere and background around this community.
It is also a subject that fascinates me enormously, I just love sects and alienating communities, with their own beliefs, rituals.
Of course, this film magnifies it, to the point of being unsubtle. But Aster knows how to dress this film up so cool, to make it so colorful and let you live in this piece of unknown territory for a while.

A24 brings horror back in a captivating form, without jumpscares, unnecessarily boring exhausted plots or horrible-looking CGI creatures. It markets emotional horror.
Robert Eggers and Ari Aster are the 2 directors of the moment for me! And I'm really looking forward to new projects.

4.5*

What a VERY bad movie. Another one that is worn by so-called 'film critics'. Who find it all 'art' and 'artistic' again. Such a 'movie house' movie. Well, I'm just going through that.

The story is stupid, boring and not at all exciting or scary. Those guys go to Sweden and straight to drugs. Then they see all kinds of weird people dancing, acting crazy and just hanging around. Go straight to Stockholm or another trendy city in Sweden such as Gothenburg. The rituals should be shocking, but as a seasoned horror fan, they're just very boring kills.

It was a waste of our beautiful Maundy Thursday evening. We should have watched the teletubbies better. That cult is much more exciting and creepy than this knick-knack.
