After the cult success of Hardware and Dustdevil, Richard Stanley was the next big thing in the early 1990s. His next project The Island of Dr. Moreau became one of the greatest disasters in film history. Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer were roped into the cast, then at the height of his fame and power. Kilmer's starry airs paralyzed the production and Stanley was taken off the film. Stanley got a ticket for his return flight, but didn't use it. He disappeared into the jungle and was replaced by old school John Frankenheimer, who also had to deal with the eccentric behavior of Kilmer and Brando. It was a film set full of suffering great and small, human drama, jealousy, pettiness and rivalry.
