This original Tarzan movie starring Olympic swimming champion Johnny Weismuller feels a little stiff, but it's still worth watching for its fine production and lively atmosphere. This was Tarzan's first sound film and the legendary 'Me Tarzan, You Jane' comes from this print...

Tarzan the Ape man I think is slightly less than Tarzan and his Mate. However, this is a very entertaining film and the animals are well trained. Especially for that time it is a film with nice quality and a nice story. Could be a little shorter.

3*

Looking for films from the pre-Hays Code era, I came across this first sound film about Tarzan more or less by accident. It may have been nearly sixty years since I last saw this movie in our local youth box. I do remember that this tough man, who snaked through the jungle almost naked and fought lions, became my instant hero during my early teens. It is therefore pure nostalgia that I still think this is a beautiful film so many years later. It actually all looks pretty primitive; the settings, the great apes, the pygmies, the way the white ivory hunters deal with their black carriers, etc. etc. But partly in view of the resources available at the time, director Woody Van Dyke (mostly known to me for his Thin Man cycle) however, a completely acceptable adventure film was put together, which was a spectacular cinema success at the time and still appeals to quite a lot of people today. I'm part of that too, although I have to admit that I sometimes laughed at the wrong moments, such as when the "brother of King Kong" was performed. So… quickly looking for the sequel: Tarzan and His Mate.
