"Human. Nature."

It's been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa for a new life as John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) by his side. Now he has been invited to come back to the Congo as a trade envoy of the parliament. However, he is unaware that he is acting as a pawn in a dangerous game of greed and revenge led by Belgian captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind this murderous plot have no idea what to expect.

The beginning may promise an exciting film, but nothing could be further from the truth. The flashbacks take all the momentum out of the film and make it very messy. Tarzan is very poorly developed and comes across as rather clumsy, especially when we hear him speak posh English. Jane also lacks any depth and their relationship has no chemistry.
Waltz plays a very predictable role, which he has played a dozen times before. Finally, the special effects are also very poor, with the low point being the scene in which they swing on the train.

Since I've seen this movie a few times now, I really started to wonder why this movie has less than 3 stars on average. After a bit of scrolling through the 46 opinions, I see that it differs relatively much per person. The only component that dominates is the story which is superficial. Well, I can get in there.

However, this is compensated by the chosen historical angle (George Washington Williams, played by Samuel L. Jackson plays a key role in the history of the Congo under the command of Leopold II, Leon Rom, played by Christopher Waltz was an inspiration for Kurtz in the classic Heart of Darkness, the presence of the Force Publique), which in turn gives a lot of weight to the film and its story.

In addition, Samuel L. Jackson, Christopher Waltz and Alexander Skarsgard all play more than decently, it is visually enjoyable (Tarzan vs. Akut is very nicely rendered though). I was only annoyed by the forced role of the emancipated Jane, although Margot Robbie herself plays okay.

A classic Tarzan with a modern twist!

The setup Tarzan is a hero and the exploiters of Africa are evil is never tampered with. It is therefore reassuring to see that in an ideal world. Tarzan and the beasts strike back, and they do so in a most entertaining way.

Also, the cast is excellent. Skarsgård is a gruff but convincing Tarzan. Robbie has to give Jane the necessary Girlpower, but her character is therefore rather one-dimensional. However, Robbie's performance is excellent and together with Skarsgård there is fortunately the necessary chemistry.

Then there's Jackson who provides the necessary humor and Waltz does what he always does as a crook.

All in all, this Tarzan gives exactly what you can expect. Lots of action, nice sets and reasonable to good acting.

The only point of criticism is that fifteen minutes were allowed and that monkey Cheetah is not to be seen in any fields or roads and I find that very unfortunate with my Avator.

Above average.
