Harada has made better ones.

Quite an ambitious film. In the distance, it might remind you a little bit of Sono's Love Exposure (especially for those watching the 169-minute version), although Sono's film remains, of course, the ultimate version.

Harada does not let himself be guided by a simple plot. He navigates through a number of events but doesn't mind dwelling for quite a long time on nonsensical subplots. Not a negative point, by the way, but anyone looking for fast-paced A-to-B cinema would be best advised to steer clear of this one.

Visually a bit dry, but the smooth acting makes up for it. Takahashi does a good job as Tatsuo, the young Yakusho is more palatable than in his later roles, and Curtis makes a cool bad guy. Woven throughout the frivolous yakuza-punk story is also a solid critical background—familiar material for anyone familiar with Japanese culture, but quite refreshing and delivered directly by Harada.

169 is just way too long for this film. Visually too sparse, not crazy or wild enough, and the film relies a bit too much on standout scenes; in between, you often have to wait a bit for the next highlight.

2.5*

I've had this on my list to watch for a very long time and am surprised that so few votes have been given so far (also on IMDB). Perhaps due to the limited availability of subtitles.

I watched, captivated from beginning to end, international version (140 minutes).
