The Cave plot

"There are places man was never meant to go"

Deep in the Romanian forest, a group of scientists stumbles upon a monastery from the 13th century. The monastery is built on an entrance to a gigantic underground cave complex. When they go missing afterwards, a team of diving experts sets out to find out what happened to them. While they are working there, the cave collapses, trapping them. As if that wasn't bad enough, there are also a number of bloodthirsty creatures in the cave...

Always nice, these kind of direct to video films. Evening, can of beer, fried food; this time flames and cheese soufflés, a joint... and enjoy mindlessly and expect little...

You could call The Cave a competitor of The Descent; since both movies are from the same year. The Descent is of course better, but the entertainment certainly does not stand in the way of The Cave.

Of course a cave in Romania. The budget should of course not be too high (although...). Here a team gathers to investigate what happened to some researchers thirty years earlier (Plot on MoMe is not quite right). They descend, have to climb, crawl, but also dive... but then they appear to invade a habitat of large bloodthirsty parasites.

That the parasites are blind does make things easier for a small percentage, but as you can expect it's a game of life and death. What is remarkable and surprising are the locations. I expected a simple composition, but the locations within the cave sometimes seem to have stepped out of a fantasy film. From an ice palace, to something that almost looks like hell (especially if you've seen The House that Jack Built not so long ago)... The acting isn't bad either and the variation from survival horror to action works well. The open end also comes out well.

Yes, I did have fun. Great snack.

3.5*

A lot of things are given away in the posts here again. So it's better to watch the movie first and then read the comments.

The film starts at interesting locations with beautiful images of nature. There are also beautiful images underground, but the caves are rather overexposed, which would not be possible with those few lamps. The music and constant sound effects don't really fit and are much too emphatic. And the images with constantly shifting camera positions make the action completely cluttered. That you don't want to show the mutated creatures right away, up to that point, but does that really have to be achieved with such hyperactive camera work? Or is that to disguise the ugly CGI?

I would have preferred to have seen the story of the group of men who go underground in the beginning of the film in that monastery in Romania thirty years ago, that seems much more interesting than the experiences of those uninteresting types in the current time. I didn't sympathize at all with what happened to them. Not very exciting and not scary!
