I started the original Cape Fear with high expectations, as I think the Martin Scorsese remake is very strong. The film should be in color according to the cover, but the Blu-ray is just black and white. Not that that was a problem for me, on the contrary, it looked fine, but still strange that wrong information is given by the publisher. That aside, this Cape Fear is a decent film, which I am a lot less pleased with than the remake. In terms of tension, I found it a lot less, although the closing on Cape Fear, on the other hand, was very strong. I thought Gregory Peck was decent as Sam Bowden while Robert Mitchum as Max Cady steals the show. Overall a decent movie, but I still prefer the remake over the original.

An engrossing crime thriller that is slightly better in itself than the remake because it contains fewer plot holes. The only downside is the straightforwardness of the story (about a lawyer who is being chased by an ex-prisoner) which is hardly abandoned. So no interesting subplots that broaden the story, but a film that takes the story straight. Despite the fact that the film does a lot of good (acting, tension...) I would have liked to see it a little more complex. Spacious 3*.

Nice to finally have watched the original in addition to the version with De Niro. The threatening atmosphere is mainly due to the strong acting performance of Mitchum, who even got so involved in his role that the camera crew had to intervene.

Mitchum is also the biggest plus of this film, the standard Hitchcock-like detective was not always believable. The tempo is also a bit on the slow side at times. But, all in all, it is still a film that has become worth watching and certainly deserves a viewing, if only for the strong Robert Mitchum.

3.5*
