"It's a wonderful world, if you'll only take the time to go around it!"

The genteel and very punctual Phileas Fogg (David Niven) makes a bet with the fellow members of his club for the sum of £20,000. Fogg claims he can circumnavigate the globe in 80 days and to prove it, he immediately puts his words into action along with his newly hired butler Passepartout (Cantinflas) and imperturbably embarks on the perilous adventure.

A mid-range video. On the one hand, it seems like a great epic. David Niven successfully stars as a British adventurer and millionaire. Only that is not really exciting to last a good three hours. The film continues nicely and quietly, but could have been a little shorter. And as said, the stereotypes are really emphasized. A whole bunch of English colonies and then the bad Indians from the US. That makes the film fun to watch, but definitely not recommended. Make it an hour shorter, put in a few songs and you have a typical Disney movie.

Still, I think that's a bit too low an average here. Well, by today's standards it is old-fashioned in many ways, but there is certainly a positive side to it. You probably have to love it: despite the eloquent, typically British dialogue at the beginning, there is an emphasis on natural images and long, almost Bollywood-esque performance segments. That Cantinflas excels in that, I had never heard of the man, but he was apparently the Charlie Chaplin of the Spanish-language film world.

Curious, by the way, is the spoken introduction, before the story really starts - just like with Ten Commandments from the same year. Was that a (short) trend at the time?

This is one of the best and most prestigious versions of Jules Verne's work, full of well-known musical tunes for you to whistle along, and with a lot of cameos. A lot of effort was put into filming locally in all countries they travel through, making this an expensive film for its time. The result is an episodic yet sparkling adventure comedy that completely relaxed me. Niven as perfectionist Phileas Fogg is a perfect caricature of the stiff Brit. But Catinflas as the faithful Passepartout should not be forgotten either. The journey takes them through a world that was almost entirely British colony at the time. Also a world where killing Indians was a national sport. One of the few disappointing scenes is the one in Spain where we are first treated to flamenco and then to a corrida. Way too long! A long action scene was also put together of the robbery of the Sioux on the passenger train. But overall, this is a classic adventure film that was totally worth it.
