Nice camera work and staging (1930!).

Romance is the main theme in this film, which also focuses on the atmosphere in and around the Foreign Legion.

Cast that was undoubtedly, and rightly, very popular at the time.

Pleasantly surprised by this visually beautiful print.

A fun film with the charm of the 1930s. But for me, personally, nothing more than that. The story doesn't amount to much, despite its themes. It all moves a bit too smoothly. But the set design, especially for that era, makes up for a lot, and the dialogue is sometimes (perhaps unintentionally) so clumsy that it becomes enjoyable again. The choice of long scenes sometimes creates a theatrical feel. There's always something going on. And Marlene Dietrich is very good and truly a classic film star to watch. The male counterparts, with their clumsiness, still fit in somewhat, but were simply blown away by Dietrich's performance.

3.5*

I previously saw the film Pandora's Box, which was supposed to star Marlene Dietrich. But a brilliant Louise Brooks took the lead role. To compensate, I made this film with Dietrich. An adventure film with a love story set in Morocco. The setting is reminiscent of Casablanca, though the story has little in common. It earned several Academy Award nominations, though it didn't win anything. Akira Kurosawa was a fan of this film, and you can tell by the style. The chemistry between Dietrich and Gary Cooper works, though the story isn't particularly remarkable. But it's still a major departure from the silent film genre that had dominated the film world until recently.
