Less than the first movie. However, action film director Frankenheimer was a good successor to Friedkin. The film dropped by Arte this week so it was dubbed, but oh my gosh, what a bad dub. My French is OK but I didn't understand a word about some characters because they cut off the words exactly and swallowed. Fortunately, this is not a difficult story to follow. Popeye Doyle is in Marseille and, together with the French police, is on the hunt for Charnier, the mastermind behind the French Connection who managed to elude the first film. At one point the gang manages to kidnap Doyle, after which they spray him with heroin . I thought the subsequent rehab period went on far too long and made the film nagging. It's rare that I fast forward, but if Doyle kept rambling on about baseball, I'd have had it. The raw crime atmosphere of the 70s is good and the film has some fine action scenes, hence a 3*, but it doesn't make the film stronger than its predecessor.

French Connection : 3.5*
French Connection II : 3*

This lesser sequel, which is equally worthwhile, paints a shocking picture of the narco city of Marseilles (now even more run down, it seems). The strong point of the story is the difficult situation in which Popeye is now placed: he does not speak a word of French and the French police do not want him. Popeye's capture (and his acquaintance with that heroin granny) did impress with their grimness. The rehab took way too long but it does represent the hell of a cold turkey quite effectively. The ending is rushed too quickly in an attempt to give the film some momentum. And in 1975, film blood may look different from orange paint...
