Undervalued and unfairly unknown.

Because this is actually just a very good movie in the genre. Maybe the timing was a bit off - Russians weren't that exciting in 2002. And relatively shortly before that, the two absolute toppers in the genre - Das Boot and Red October - had passed. You will soon find yourself in the shadows.

But wrongly so. Because a very solid film with all the obligatory ingredients, but also realistic and even more or less true. With a wonderfully cliché Ford who would rather drown with man and mouse than be caught, and on the other hand an almost human Neeson. And all wonderfully Russian - although of course it is somewhat the Hollywood version of Russian. Nothing wrong with this kind of movie.

A cross between The Hunt for Red October and Chernobyl with a Russian submarine in full Cold War. It lacks the charm of The Hunt for Red October and the thrill of Das Boot. The film continues at a leisurely pace, with little enthusiasm. After a while there is some tension, but by then we are already counting down to the end of the film. An American film with American actors, some of whom already try harder than others to bring a Russian accent. Not a disaster in itself, Sean Connery in Red October was quite convincing with his Scottish accent.

K-19 has become a run-of-the-mill disaster film that emphasizes the true events several times. No wonder that the film stands out too little among the other submarine films. It's not bad, but it never gets good either.
