A great soundtrack featuring songs primarily by Kris Kristofferson, who plays the title role. Cisco Pike is a rock musician whose career has failed and who has already been arrested twice for drug trafficking. Gene Hackman (always good) is the corrupt police officer who forces Cisco to sell a substantial amount of cannabis. Kristofferson is excellent, and Karen Black makes the most of her somewhat thankless role. The film is quite dated with its hippie-speak, and the story is rather thin, but the atmosphere and the performances of the leads keep it interesting nonetheless.

Image of the times.

Let's start with the most obvious and somewhat poignant observation: the main characters are all no longer with us. Well, it was a film set 54 years ago, so you might think it's a bit more positive that the main characters passed away only recently.

The rest is just as long ago – people are called "cats," the music comes from tape recorders, and it was just as hard for an artist to survive without a part-time job. Or as a police officer.

Kristofferson and Hackman give great performances—you'd expect that, but it has to come through. Karen Black is more enjoyable and unexpected, with the most beautiful scene in the entire film, and Harry Dean Stanton with just about the ugliest—it's also shocking that he's younger in this film than in almost everything I've seen him from, yet he looks at least thirty years older. You'd almost think it has something to do with all those mind-altering substances from that era.

I found the soundtrack, partly composed by Kristofferson himself, a bit dull. Even he's played better. As a film, I found it rather marginal—it has a few moments, but overall, it's probably a bit underwhelming. Unless, uh...
