Very solid debut by Kar Wai. The premise is clearly visible that he would exhibit years later and that would rise to unprecedented heights at the turn of the century. Based on the rest of Kar Wai's oeuvre that I have seen and the beautiful DVD cover, I did not expect this to be an unadulterated crime film. Despite that surprise, I still enjoyed it very much.

Kar Wai remains at his best as a romantic, but here too he knows how to make a strong contribution in the heyday of the action film. The scenes in the apartment with his niece are the highlights. He can build up that tension between two characters like no other, and as a viewer witnessing this remains a pleasure.

Kar Wai's talent is clearly visible but it - very logically - does not come out completely. A very entertaining debut but the balance and beautiful filming would only follow later. Cool.

If being a tough hero is the most important thing in the crime world the filmmaker depicts, then a bloody action film is undoubtedly on the way.

There's also a touch of romance, but it's no match for it and is only there as an intermezzo between the fights.

Disappointed in this Wong Kar Wei. Had more fun with his "Days of Boeing wild" and even "In the mood for love".

Kar-wai Wong immediately attracts attention with this debut film. And the best was yet to come. The film is a gangster drama with a clear story, but the director immediately focuses on atmosphere. Where the romance or drama in other films just cause a dip in the film, that is precisely the trump card of the film here. Which is further elaborated later. The time to take a shot, the wonderful color palette and the matching music. And not surprisingly, the best actors Andy Lau and Maggie Cheung provide the best moments. We will see them more in Kar-wai Wong's films later. Jackie Cheung is a lot less, the nuisance in the film. Unfortunately, at the Hong Kong Awards he is the only one of the three who was able to convert his nomination into a prize. Lau and Cheung, but also Kar-wai, provide a new style. Wonderful to see. You notice the progress that the director has made since then, but with such a debut you have not missed the start.
