Maggie Cheung wears dozens of cheongsams - traditional Chinese dresses - with all kinds of patterns. Gracefully, she strides through the streets of Hong Kong. Mahjong and noodles are typical Chinese, but then suddenly there is such a clock from Siemens. Also western is Nat King Cole with his version of Quizás, quizás, quizás.

The evocative atmosphere is determined by the slow images accompanying the string theme, an adaptation of the music that Shigeru Umebayashi wrote for Yumeji (1991). Many events are shown through a door or window opening, turning the viewer into a distant spy. Light, colors and rain add to the mood.

A just-not-relationship or a romance that remains platonic is often more interesting, because then the tension is never released. The desire for is more exciting than the act. The main characters Chow and Chan feel watched by their gossipy neighbors, but it's not just social control that holds them back. It is mainly their own conscience. They don't want to stoop to the level of their respective husbands. The faces of these other halves are never visible, only the back of their heads and their voices can be heard. Telling by omission is a subtle technique. A nice find is the role play in which the husband is acted out by Tony Leung.

The move to Angkor Wat is surprising but understandable. You don't want to reveal such a secret in your own neighborhood. The Cambodian monument is a worthy confidant. Only a Buddhist monk is witness, but that must not be a big gossip. Although slowness and mystery are central, you still have to be on the edge of your seat so as not to miss a detail.

Revised after more than 4 years, and I like the film a lot better. At the time, I found the film confusing at times. Partly it would play a role that Asian actors sometimes look a lot alike, also difficult to tell apart in terms of name, and that played out at the time. That was now a lot less, or better: completely absent. After all, I knew the film and I am now used to more films from those regions.

Beautiful film, especially visually. Sometimes nice and dreamy, sometimes you feel the moisture and heat of Hong Kong through your screen and those dresses are beautifully colorful. And in between secretly quite a beautiful love story that sometimes could have been a little warmer - a top score is really not in it - to really make an impact. But as a whole a nice sketch of the atmosphere that manages to move at the end. 4.0*.

Decent film, but not as convincing as many others here. Slightly too little involved or sucked into the love story and the passion or inhibition that kept floating between the couple. That déclic is necessary to give this film a top score.

The approach is special. Less special, but effective was the warm, sultry use of color in the decor, with many shades of red. The film is also partly suggestive and leans on what seems to be going on without it being explicitly depicted. This atmosphere or tension does offer the film some extras, although it was less accessible for me at times.
