Beautiful subdued Vietnamese film about a maid employed by a wealthy family. Just as with Terrence Malick, for example, nature plays a prominent role in the film with beautiful images of dripping papayas or a colony of ants. One of the sons does not hesitate to torture the ants with candle wax or crush them a number of times. The film is said to have been shot in a French studio. Nice to deliver such a nice result. Great decor, top!

The little girl in particular attracted me the most. Very fine interpretation, open, loyal and sincere. Not much happens, but the harmony with nature and the life of the little girl is beautiful. Later it waters down a bit, but that can't spoil the fun.

Excellent cinematography and camera use. A film about everyday things in life. Also about food that makes you suddenly hungry. Fine Oriental arthouse!

I think it's a nice movie, but I'm not very enthusiastic about it. I wasn't constantly captivated and I wasn't very moved by it. What I like about the film is the tranquility it contains. There is not much talk and looks say a lot. It is subdued and atmospheric, with attention to nature. I think Norwegian Wood is better from this director, but I also give this one a pass. 3*

A few years ago I saw Raise the red latern , this movie reminded me a bit of that because of the same quiet

realm .

Unfortunately , this film can not reach the same level ( although I certainly do not want to say that the film did not succeed ) .

All beautifully filmed, that's for sure, but just a little too little happens to really linger.
