The Great Escaper plot

"Inspired by a true love story."

nice film, very similar to the film "The Last Rifleman" also from 2023 with Pierce Brosnan.

don't know which one was first.

but almost a remake.

this one was a bit milder, less moving.

hence this half point less.

but still highly recommended

excellent playing Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson

Double bill with The Last Rifleman - Michael Caine vs. Pierce Brosnan. Then you would expect that this cannot be a fair fight, and no, it is not, but completely unexpectedly it is Caine who takes the lead. At no point is he convincing as a rickety veteran, and certainly not as an Irishman.

But the story as this film tells it is the 'real' story of the 'real' Bernard Jordan. Is that important? You might argue that it is a film and not a documentary, and that it is therefore not obliged to cover reality. But on the other hand, both films are unmistakably about one and the same man, and it remains at least remarkable that such different stories occur there.

Still, the right story does not guarantee a better film. If the cast of The Last Rifleman had played this story, it could have become an instant classic. Now it mainly feels like a missed opportunity.

Two two-time Oscar winners and cultural icons say goodbye to the big screen with this not-too-sentimental drama. Bernard [Michael Caine] and Rene [Glenda Jackson] met during wartime and married shortly after Bernard returned from combat in Europe, where he, among other things, survived the battle on D-Day as a sailor. Because he is too late to join a group tour, Bernard goes to the D-Day commemoration in France on his own. Along the way he befriends former RAF pilot Arthur [John Standing] and a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, who, like Bernard, struggle with their war experiences. Parker's direction is not always subtle, but Caine and Jackson are in their element and prove once again that talent and craftsmanship do not have to fade with age.
