Good crime/thriller. Nice little plot, but the wannabe vagueness kills the film. Nice role by D'Onofrio, the rest of the cast remains a bit on the surface. Not one to remember.

Reasonable film, which starts well, but slowly loses power as the film progresses.

Val Kilmer here plays an interesting role of a man who harbors both grief and revenge. As a result, he also gets involved in drugs, which slowly destroy him. Kilmer plays well, but it is mainly Vincent D'Onofrio, who manages to impress with his rather deranged role as a drug dealer. The first part of the film is clearly a character study, but slowly the film shifts from that to a regular thriller, and it all becomes a little less interesting.

The camera work is solid and director Caruso keeps it all entertaining with some surreal touches. However, the overly positive ending is quite a downer and doesn't fit into the rest of the film as far as I'm concerned. If it had been the other way around, the film could still count on a pass, but this takes away a lot of the rest of the film. It's not all that bad, but there were clearly better movies about drugs made during that time.

2.5*

Despite the simple script with an ending where an available scenario is actually too easily used, "the salton sea" is still an interesting film. The atmosphere that is created is very strong, where the end justifies the means. Val Kilmer plays his role as Danny Parker aka Tom Van Allen well and the rest of the cast does the same.

Highly underrated early '00's noirish crime thriller set in a seedy druggie underbelly. One of Kilmer's best and most underappreciated performances. A shame this movie was so overlooked.
