Good film, got me in the mood to do development work in Africa.

I then watched Home Alone part 1 and that urge was completely gone.

I think The Interpreter is very nicely filmed, the screenplay is well written and the acting is good, even by Sean Penn, who I believe was conceived by an iron. The only thing that bothered me was the music. Just no music under a movie, that would be a real blessing. Now I'm on the edge of my seat, with my hand in the bag of chips for 5 minutes and my mouth at 9:30, and then suddenly a faint melody starts playing that takes me all the way back to my dimly lit room on 2nd floor. Harlem. Pity.

I also think that the film portrays the idea of a folk hero who descends to a corrupt murderer and the consequences. It even touched me, to be honest.

All in all a 4*.

Sydney Pollack.

Maybe I was slightly influenced by the making-of. But that does make it a bit more clear about the genius of the director who pulls the strings here behind the scenes. Takes the whole thing to a higher level.

The movie itself, too bad there are a few parts that are skipped at the end. Yet the whole is still a very penetrating drama, and combined in a quite genius way with the tension that belongs to a thriller. High politics in confrontation with reality, ideals in confrontation with man.

Sean Penn seems somewhat on autopilot, as if he has something more important on his mind. Perhaps explainable from the plot, but still - but his qualities are such that that is still a degree more than you can expect from an actor. Nicole Kidman may have already been botoxed, but here it still has the effect it means - she comes across as a fragile girl with a strong will and an agenda of her own. It's a shame she didn't manage to pass that on to a strong woman with her own will and her own agenda and chose the youth - but that's outside of this film.

In terms of cinematography somewhat according to the old style, Pollack's age may be somewhat apparent there. Nothing to complain about really, because solid craftsmanship, but it won't really be innovative or startling. What annoyed me for a while is the soundtrack - apparently the maestro can also overlook such a detail.

If we take it all for what it is, then it is a very solid film, craftsmanship, and an original story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. In a way that may be somewhat dated, but still has value - and therefore actually deserves more respect.
